Minister Confirms MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, while staff have been advised to refrain from discussing classified matters in any cars.

Safety Advice for Defence Personnel

During a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made cars.

He said that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of car, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Security Context

This announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The broader defence situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government activities, including transport use to communication habits.
