World Health Organization Confronts Significant Staff Reduction Following US Financial Withdrawal
This global public health organization revealed intentions to cut its workforce by almost a quarter – totaling more than 2,000 positions – before the middle of 2026.
Funding Shortfall Triggers Substantial Restructuring
The move comes following the US, previously the agency's largest donor, withdrew funding earlier this year.
The US government was responsible for approximately 18% of the organization's total budget, creating a significant budgetary shortfall.
Expected Staff Reductions
Based on internal estimates, the staff will decrease from 9,401 positions in January 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.
The reduction of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and regular attrition.
"This year was one of the toughest in WHO's history, while we undertook a painful but essential process of prioritisation and restructuring," stated the agency's director-general.
Financial Shortfall Persists
This Switzerland-headquartered organization now faces a funding gap of $1.06bn for the upcoming biennium, amounting to nearly a fourth of its total funding.
The amount marks an improvement from a prior projected gap of $1.7bn noted in May.
Not Included Finances
The budget projections do not include a further $1.1bn in potential funding from current discussions with multiple contributors.
The spokesperson for the organization stated that the current unsecured part of the biennial budget is actually smaller than in earlier years, crediting this to multiple reasons:
- Reduced overall budget
- Initiation of a new donor outreach effort
- Higher in participating countries' mandatory contributions
This realignment process is currently nearing its completion, allowing the agency to progress with a reshaped operational model.
